About "Xhosa Mama"

(Written in 2009) "After a number of years living temporarily in the UK, I went home last July for a couple of months in an attempt to soak my soul in the African sun and ease the homesickness that plagues me. Having recently become a mother, I was incredibly touched by the graceful, strong and proud young Xhosa mothers I saw while driving past the Motherwell township in Port Elizabeth. They had such presence and seemed so resourceful in comparison to the poor people of other countries I have visited whose apathy and self-pity kept them stuck in their dirty, slovenly hopelessness."
