About "Winter Garden Scene"

Briar Ghyll is a famous old family estate in Pietermaritzburg. The acres of garden and huge old trees make it a beautiful refuge for birds, butterflies and small mammals. The scene was painted from life in winter – which in this part of Kwazulu-Natal is one of the most picturesque times of the year. The days are clear and sunny, the air crisp, and there is an abundance of flowering plants. The large red flowering poinsettia grows near a Chinese Fan Tree, which in winter is a shower of yellow gold leaves. Painted in water colour the style is loose and flowing – reminiscent of the impressionists love of light, colour and natural beauty.
