About "Spiritual Journey"
My search for a new South African identity after 1994 is the theme of this work. To symbolize my own culture, that of the white, Afrikaansspeaking group, I use a torn-up photograph of one of the friezes in the Voortrekken Monument in Pretoria depicting black and white enemies dying side by side at the Battle of Blood River. After 1994 these enemies are now members of the same nation and have to find a new identity. The lower section shows a rock painting of a group of San (the original inhabbitants of Africa)on a journey in deep space. Aquatint and photo etching with chine collé on acid free Zerkall paper Size of Edition: 20

About Titia
I use history and the varied cultural heritage of South Africa as sources for images depicting life on a cultural boundary. My work is essentially a search for identity in a fast evolving country: questions about my past( descendant of French Huguenots) are coupled with questions about the future in a country where the Westernization of its original peoples and the Africanization of European immigrants and colonists have been taking place for the past 300 - 400 years.
