About "Bluelight Serenade"
One can almost smell the cigarette smoke, alcohol and sweat carried on the poorly airconditioned air in this scene. And the entertainer doesn't look particularly enamoured with his job but everyone else is out to kill. However, it was the unusual light in this picture that took my fancy. Ther is a blue disco light shining from the right which is so bright that it has appeared to have changed the colour of peoples clothes. For instance, the woman in the centre of the picture with the head-dress is actually wearing a yellow dress. On the other hand, there is a bright white light coming in from the left which not only renders the guitar players skin a strange colour, but when it meets the blue light, tends to draw the viewers eye into the back of the pub.

About Don
While he might be relatively unknown as an artist, Don Clarke of Durban (and more recently Underberg) is one of South Africa s most successful and experienced songwriters. One of his best known songs, Sanbonani, won the song for SA in 1986 and it was the first song written by an SA Artist to receive an honorary mention in the USA Songwriting Competition. He has won numerous songwriting competitions including the Splashy Fen song Hey-Na-Splashy, and the official SABC song for Bafana Bafana World Cup 2010, Kick it Up. He has had many of his songs recorded over the years by a diverse section of artists and has also written a large portion of the music for the films of Leon Schuster; South Africa s most successful film maker.
But while Don s name has long been synonymous with MUSIC,it is a little known fact that Don is also an accomplished painter. He likes to say that painting is just a hobby which offers him some relief when he gets tired of the demands of producing commercial music, but the fact that he has sold most of what he has painted over the years says something different. In fact, even though he wont readily admit it, painting is fast becoming far more than just a hobby for him. Don is a versatile artist, who has spent much of his painting career concentrating on landscapes. However, at the present moment, Don is concentrating on his people studies, and has turned to what he knows best[0x1]music. He deliberately hunted down as many old photographs as he could of people playing musical instruments and/or musical entertainers.
He was fortunate to be able to source and construct many wonderful images and set about putting together a series called The Art of Music and has resolved to paint only large canvasses (76cm x 101cm) .
Don has dabbled with watercolours previously but loves the freedom of expression that oils give him. Don is also a prolific painter and will focus to obsession on a painting once he starts one.
