About "Persecution" A couple of tomato boxes stacked on top of each other, the wrong way up, caught my attention so I decided to paint them. The eyes and the mouths just sort of “appeared.” The image made me think about persecution – how there is so little difference between the persecutors and the persecuted – it just depends on who, or what country or culture, is on top at any moment in history. On a personal level it made me think about how one part of the soul can persecute another part, so much so, that the persecuted part doesn’t even realize it is being persecuted and even sees the world through the eyes of the persecutor. Yes, I feel persecuted too – by a hypercritical, ultra-negative inner “somebody” who is totally against me expressing myself in any way. Painting is one of my ways of saying to hell with that persecutor. |
