About "Madiba's Hope"
This painting, is part of a series of works to honour the memory of Nelson Mandela, who is called "Madiba" or father by South Africans. Mandela is known for his love of children. This painting illustrates the deep concern that Madiba had for all children and especially those living in poverty and substandard situations. But no matter how dire the circumstances, Mandela gave these children hope that life can be better.
The artist wanted to make this child universal in appearance. The child could be from one of South Africa's townships, or from Indonesia, China, South America, or could be a Native American or Eskimo. Actually she is also ageless. Is she 8 or 18? No matter where she lives or how old she is, Mandela has given hope to people the world over that by coming from compassion and forgiveness and by working together, we can all strive to make this world a better place to live for all.
This painting is rich in colours and texture. The strong geometric design of the cap contrasts with the softness of her face. The flowing curtain to the left allows air in and sunshine to provide the warmth of optimism. This highly textured work of art literally shimmers with colours.

About Dr. Michael
According to the Ico Gallery in New York, "Dr. Michael Durst is one of the most exciting South African artists. As a psychologist, Dr. Durst's paintings create not only beauty for the beholder, but also a state of relaxation and healing. His work combines realism with impressionism, evoking an emotional link to the heart thus the name: Heartscapes.
Dr. Durst loves to paint the beauty of Cape Town--especially the Waterfront, Table Mountain, ocean views, spring flowers, the vineyards and, of course, the people of the Cape. According to Dr. Durst, "I like to re-create a "magical moment" that I have experienced. As I do so, I strive to achieve a delicate balance between the realism of the scene and the even greater intensity created by light, texture and colour. At a certain juncture, an integration occurs. The captured moment in time is taken in without judgment by the brain, allowing the vibrational intensity to adjust the frequency of the hearts rhythms. As the integrated process continues, the viewer becomes awash with positive emotions, a sense of peace, and greater coherence all of which contribute to physical, mental and spiritual healing."
