About "The Rider"
'The Rider' is a large-scaled work based on a still frame from video footage taken of members of the SAP Equestrian Unit excercising their horses at Emmerentia Dam in Johannesburg.
At the time I was interested in creating works which explored aspects of certain working professions, such as the South African Police. Because professions such as those found in the various units of the South African Policeforce are immensely far from the world of art, I found it interesting to chat to individuals in such professions and see what, if anything, art meant to them, experiencing the extreme, harsh, often brutal experiences they might with every working day.
When I asked one member of the Crime Prevention Unit what art might mean to him personally, I was profoundly moved by what he said: "Art to me is like a beautiful tattoo that you might get that really means something to you. It's getting on your motorbike and letting go and doing a wheelie down the road. Art to me has got to mean something and bring something to your life everyday." One of the best descriptions of Art that I've ever heard.

"The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge, but creativity"
- Albert Einsten
My relationship with painting is an ever-evolving one, though it's proven in most part to be about exploring the potential of the medium, experimenting with ideas and imagery. It's about having fun and creating objects of beauty, captivation - and occassionally to create works which inspire contemplation and fresh ways of thinking and seeing - to put out into the world for others to enjoy.
My painting style could be called eclectic, varied and playful and I approach each work in a working style that I feel will either satisfy, engage or challenge the viewer, and which will do the subject of the work the greatest justice depending on which direction the working process end up going in.
