About "An Altered Landscape"

I was inspired by al the materials in our scrapyard and took photos of different objects. Some of the photos I distorted with the help of a computer and then made photostats. The latter I used together with the image of a tree, to create a new landscape that symbolically represents desolation. This work was accepted for the 1st ASA Open exhibition 2012.

About Kato

I am blessed to live surrounded by mountains and bush veld close to Nelspruit in Mpumalanga. At present I am retired, serving my third term as secretary of the Lowveld Association of Arts and am project leader of our Community Workshops in aid of uplifting art education in rural areas. My art works is mostly influenced by nature, everyday objects, life and the Scrapyard. The latter (our family business for many years) has
its own character filled with colour, structural forms, monochromatic tonal values, materials and textures. In stark symbolic contrast stands nature, full of life and with its own colour palet and different landscapes. It is from these two opposing landscapes that I derive much of my creative spirit.
