About Laurette

Laurette De Jager

Laurette de Jager is a professional artist and teacher of art. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions since leaving the Jewellery trade in 2007. She specializes in oils concentrating on themes that range from realism to surrealism - realistic portraits, found objects, and atmospheric scenes from everyday life. Her work focuses on looking beyond the discernible to that which functions as undercurrents for society. After completing her Higher National diploma in Jewellery design and manufacture, Laurette went on to achieve a number of awards during her 8 years working as a professional jewellery designer. She has been working as a fulltime teaching artist since 2009, having worked under the mentorship of Dr. Gregory Kerr since 2014. She is currently enrolled in the Masters of Visual Arts program at UNISA. The title of her dissertation: "The Poetry of Decay - A Painters response to the Dystopian Aesthetic"

"My work focus on finding beauty in life, creation and everyday objects. I believe that all beauty is inherently flawed and that the true essence of a piece lies in its ability to engage the viewer in spite of what it may represent in the physical realm. I treasure finding magnificence in the blemished; be it a decimated ruin, or discarded animal skull. I find myself drawn to decay in all its forms - in nature, society and urban decay. Believing that at the point of decay all pretense is stripped away leaving the subject in its most honest, and therefore vulnerable state."
