About "Lighthouses - Slangkop Light 1"

Lighthouses have fascinated me since childhood. Time spent at sea, while in the Navy, only strengthened this fascination. Not only are lighthouses practical, life-saving, mechanical constructions of some complexity, but they are also so much more. They are also the romance of lone, brave lighthouse keeper, and the strong tower that withstands any storm. Finally, they are the ultimate symbol of the light on a hill that cannot be hidden; the light that is never overcome by the darkness; the light that saves.

The Slangkop (Snakehead) Light, situated near Kommetjie on the Cape Peninsula, is the tallest cast iron lighthouse on the South African coast. Its light has a range of 33 nautical miles.

About Robin

Robin Bownes

Photography has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My father has a photograph of me, at age 3, taking a photograph of him. In high school I discovered that photography and a camera confidently wielded, provided access to people & places that might otherwise have been out of reach.

However, what fascinated me from the very beginning, was that I could capture moments in time, manipulate them, and turn them into art. Digital photography and editing has of course opened previously unimagined possibilities in this regard. The digital age has forever changed what it means to be a photographer. Photography now includes not only 'pure' photographic images, straight from the camera, but also digital imaging art, using photographs as a starting point and framework for new artistic, photographic possibilities.

I believe that photography is art if it is treated as such. I believe that art requires constant experimentation, learning and pushing of boundaries. I believe that creativity and its appreciation is a basic function of humanity. I don't believe in limiting myself to any one style or aspect of my art.
