About Emile

Emile Theart

Emile Theart was born and raised in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. After graduating from high school he enrolled at the Port Elizabeth Technikon to study fine art. Specializing in sculpture he completed his National Diploma in 1991, followed by a Higher National Diploma in 1993. He had the privilege to study under Phil Kolbe, Anton Momberg and David Jones. He also studied stained glass under Hunter Nesbit.

After completing his studies he joined David Manning Stained Glass in Port Elizabeth working on numerous projects ranging from new works to restoration of many historic windows across the Eastern Cape.

Since January 2000 he has been working in the entertainment industry as lighting designer. In the last number of years he has been sculpting and also making moulds for other artists and potters.

Other interests include music, photography and rock climbing.

He is married to Adele and currently living in Cape Town.

" I draw inspiration from the natural environment. I'm always collecting bits of driftwood, shells and bones along the coast line. I am also influenced by sculptors such as Jean Arp, Allan Hauser and above all Constantin Brancusi.

I like to encourage people to interact both visually and by way of touch with my works, as it is very much a part of my own creative process. While sculpting I will often close my eyes and only use touch to make sure the lines and surfaces are absolutely perfect."
