About "Reflecting Shadow I "

The aim of the Shadow Series is to explore the literal, metaphorical and psychological definitions of the word "shadow". These sculptures explore the absence or obtrusion of light through light absorbent surface textures and dark patination. The artist uses her own body as a reference for each sculpture alluding to the idea of the shadow as an inseparable companion. And finally the shadow represents an aspect of the unconscious mind as defined by Carl Gustav Jung within Memories, Dreams, Reflections.

This series aims to explore the complex nature of engaging with higher-order consciousness which is one of mankind's greatest gifts and simultaneous burdens. On a path towards self-knowledge, self-awareness and self-acceptance these sculptures activate the unconscious mind. The psychological shadow can haunt our lives, becoming a powerfully destructive force in both the internal and external world if we refuse to acknowledge its existence. On the other hand, if we consciously attempt to integrate and befriend the shadow it has the potential to enrich our lives, perhaps even becoming our greatest strength.

Although this series is largely autobiographical in nature, a reflection of the artist's internal struggles and triumphs, the sculptures also aim to represent the psychological shadow as a poignant universal phenomenon that is an integral aspect of the lived human experience.

This life-size sculpture is only available in bronze. Since the sculpture has not yet been cast into bronze, a 50% deposit needs to be paid upfront to begin the bronze casting process. The production process may take up to 3 months. This sculpture is editioned out of 6.
