About "Sacrificial Stone"

I photographed this ancient Greek sacrificial stone during a visit to Crete. It is lying on plowed land, ready to receive seeds or plants. It is surrounded by half submerged fragments of ceramic or porcelain. These symbolize some of the varied cultures that constitute the South African nation. The work expresses the idea that if one loves this country you should be willing to become part by not clinging to divisive cultural barriers.Softground etching on acid free paper by Hahnemuhle

About Titia

I use history and the varied cultural heritage of South Africa
as sources for images depicting life on a cultural boundary. My work is essentially a search for identity in a fast evolving country: questions about my past( descendant of French Huguenots) are coupled with questions about the future in a country where the Westernization of its original peoples and the
Africanization of European immigrants and colonists have been taking place for the past 300 - 400 years.
