About "Sketch for It Eat It"

This image came to me in a dream. At the time I was umdergoing changes in my life. I felt that I was consuming and being consumed on the food web of life. This work became the basis and companion work for the sculpture "It Eat It".

About Nicholas

Nicholas Woodhead

Nicholas Jonathan Woodhead: Born on 15 January 1963, in Redruth, Cornwall, England. As a child, I lived in England, Kenya and Iran before settling in South Africa in 1974. I Matriculated from the Johannesburg High School for Art, Ballet & Music, in art, before earning a BA (Fine Arts) from the University of the Witwatersrsrand in 1987. I lived in England from 1987 to 1990, where I earned a certificate in colour therapy and worked as a graphic designer.

My studies in colour therapy had a subtle, yet profound, effect on my painting and drawing: my use of colour and light became less intellectual and more intuitive, to convey special, often ineffable, meaning to the viewer.

The son of a helicopter pilot, my formative years in a variety of countries around the world has enriched my artistic vision, bringing a wide range of cultural influences into my work, as well as a wide variety of memories of the places in which I lived. These memories are combined with the everyday things that occur in the present to create surreal and fantasy pictures which convey my thoughts, feelings and ideas. My training has made me very flexible; apart from surreal and fantasy works, I paint almost anything, including landscapes, interiors, portraits, pets and wildlife, as well as the occasional abstract work.

I work in oils, watercolours, pastels and all drawing media. Occasionally, I sculpt. I take commissions.

In addition, I teach art and make computer graphic designs.
