About "Slave Bell"

(Reproduction of Coetzee)

The original slave bell is situated in the vicinity of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Stellenbosch is one of the oldest towns in South Africa. Slave Bells were found on farms during 1600 – 1700 and were used to call on slaves to report for work. This pen sketch was the artist’s first experience in this medium and is a copy of Coetzee’s Slave Bell. Other pen sketches by Van Zyl are: Garden tools at the shed, Card Players and Geraniums at a farmhouse door.
