About "Young Man in a Cap" This drawing is from a series of chalk pastel portraits. This model was a young security guard who was so excited that he was getting his portrait done! Chalk pastel is one of my most favourite media - there is so much you can do with it, so many marks you can make: from soft creamy colours, delicate smudges to harsh strident strokes. What I wanted to achieve with these portraits was to suggest the whole without drawing everything. For example, the peak cap on the man's head is not drawn, but the starch of the peak indicates the presence of the cap. |
