About Heidi

Heidi Kern

It has been a life long dream to become a professional artist but this only became a reality in the past two years. I have made a concious decision to put aside all else that is of little importance and focus on making this dream a reality.

For me, my art is all about moulding and shaping colours and textures until the final image is reached. For me it's all about passion. Almost like a sculpture but with the use of colour to create the shapes rather than clay or rock.
"I try to apply colours like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music." Joan Miro

I am inspired by nature, especially flowers. Not by the obvious objects infront of us but prefer to look deeper and closer where we, often in too much of a hurry to notice, overlook the carefully designed shapes, colours and patterns that mother nature put together to form the beautiful flowers and plants we take for granted. I am always observing. I like to get up close to my subjects and observe the shadows and highlights created by the layers of petals to form the final image. I prefer to work in large format. It is then as though one can actually feel and smell the flower.
I am also inspired by the human form, especially women. Women are strong yet gentle, tough yet soft. I try to depict the women in my paintings as though they have been carved out of stone yet soft enough to reach out and touch.
I tend to dive head first into my paintings. Being mostly self taught, I have the freedom to explore and create as I please. For me the blank canvass is exciting not daunting. I do not use a palette but prefer to mix my colours on the canvass as I go along - thus the feeling of moulding and sculpting. I do commissions and will work from photographs if any one has special requests or portraits.
My wish is that every brushstroke will fill you with as many moments of joy and passion to look at as it gives me to create.

"When we do what we love, we don't care about time. For at least at that moment, time doesn't exist and we are truly free." Wieder Marcia
