About Hannes

Hannes van Zyl

Hello. I am Hannes van Zyl and I had no art training, I only inherited this gene that is kicking around in some members of my family. I used to farm in the Asbestos Mountains of Griqualand West in the Northern Cape where I also mined tiger's eye. Because of the natural colours of the banded ironstone found there, I did some oil paintings on it.

I retired in 1999 and me and my old lady lived in the little West Coast town of Jacobsbaai near Vredenburg until July 2015 when we moved to a Retiement Village in Brackenfell. I was never a very productive artist as there always seemed to be something more important to do in the little spare time I had, like fishing and getting my pilots licence at the age of 50. I did my first painting 45 years ago.

Some months ago the little gene started acting up again and I decided to try and do some sketches of my family. I first tried pastels, but it was a complete disaster so I ended up by using simple coloured pencils. The family gallery is now complete (in fact, I ran out of family) unless some new ones are born. Recently I did some pencil sketches for a book with short stories by Rena de Villiers, "Dorp in 'n Bos" as well as some sketches of rare and endangered species for "Bosnuus".

I would like to share some of my work with you. Hope you enjoy it!
