About "After School"

One of a series of works I did of children in our community, From one of my own reference photos, I captured this expression of joy on her way home from school. Living in a very poor community, you can not help but admire her tenacity knowing that their may not even be a decent meal awaiting her but still she is happy.

About Johan

I was born in East London Eastern Cape South Africa. After almost 30 years in the Banking industry and living in Johannesburg, I decided to leave the corporate world and settled in the small town of Steytlerville, Eastern Cape, South Africa to pursue my second career as an Artist.
The subject matter of my paintings is wide and varied and I approach every piece as an exploratory journey of learning and experimentation. I aspire to create work which has a long term message and want the viewer to experience something new every time they look at a piece. Complacent and repetitive are words I never want to be associated with my work. Every space, person or object is unique in its own setting/ environment and I challenge myself is to interpret that uniqueness and the emotion it invokes. My work is influenced by physical environment and the people who make up this rich community of Steytlerville.
