About Alan

Alan Dent

The production of fine art on carved leather partly originated from the fact that I was borne and raised in South Africa in close proximity to the world famous KRUGER National Park and as an adult to visit private game reserves such as SABI-SABI and LONDOLOZI. Many of these lodges now market my pieces with clients from as far afield as Europe, America and Australia.

Then during a visit to the South West region of the United States, I came into contact with the traditional leather work as used by the cowboys of North America and this is where I purchased a variety of hand tooled articles and came to really enjoy the look and feel of carved leather.

Upon my return I trained myself by working through the instruction manuals of some of the greatest leather carvers and artists such as Al Stohlman and Christine Stanley. After I had learned the basics I was specifically drawn to the carved leather pictorials of endangered wildlife in their natural habitat.

This is where the subjects and all their fine details are carved and modelled into the leather. This particular aspect of the process provides me with endless satisfaction as the two dimensional leather surface is transformed - the process is somewhere between normal art and sculpture. The one comment often associated with the pieces I produce are the exceptional depth and lifelike appearance they seem to have.

The completed carving is then stained with dyes and/or painted with acrylics.

Recently I have expanded my range of subjects to include aircraft and portraits. The first portrait of Nelson Mandela was upon the request of a current wildlife client and posed a specific challenge to capture the man's world re-knowned features.

My major objective is to produce a wide variety of collectable quality, fine art on carved leather for the discerning admirer looking for art that is different and somewhat unique.

Should you have a special picture you would like to be carved in leather I would be happy to discuss your specific requirements and provide to provide a quotation.
