About Marlene
Harmony in Diversity
"Doing what you love is the cornerstone of abundance in your life" - Wayne Dyer
I am a South African Artist currently living in Bangkok, Thailand. I work with diverse mediums in diverse forms. My work is loaded with rich colour and form influenced by my diverse background. I lived and worked in Africa, Ukraine, Russia, Scandinavia (Sweden) and Asia. I was trained in Linguistics, Music and Art in South Africa with added courses in Art in Thailand, Russia, China and Ukraine. In South Africa I worked under the tutelage of Mosie Stutterheim. Russia introduced me to Icon Painting and Matryoshka Painting under the well-known and published artist Zhanna Nikolaeva. My time in Thailand took me through the capable painting hands of Roy Hill, Elsie Evans and Lisa Bergen at The Attic Gallery and the well known Thai artist, Kosol Pinkul at La Lanta Gallery. I also trained in Japanese Woodblock Printing under the tutelage of Ralph Kiggell, Japanese Woodblock Printing expert. The Scandinavian love for design through minimalism and simplicity, added a dimension of peacefulness within my otherwise abundant use of colour and form. My work as an Artist and Teacher of Art in International Schools in Ukraine, Russia, Switzerland and China as well as Africa left me with a real "harmony in diversity" background having worked with students from over 60 different nationalities. I also have a working history in set design and experiment mainly with the nature of aesthetics of surroundings and visual knowledge. I will have duo exhibitions during October and November 2009 in Bangkok, Thailand.
I winked at the moon and the moon winked back... my motto!
Press release - my current exhibitions in Bangkok: In October and November, Hemisphere Bangkok is proud to exhibit the harmoniously diverse and creative imaginings of Marlene van Jaarsveld.
Marlenes paintings reflect the aesthetics of the environments that she has experienced during her extensive travels in Africa, Ukraine, Russia, China, Scandinavia and Asia. Her work is abundant with rich colour, captured by varied mediums in original forms. Her paintings are powerful, peaceful, poetic. Concrete to Canvas is the title of South African artist Marlene van Jaarsveld's first new exhibition. The exhibition showcases her love for the growing trend in urbane Urban Art or Graffiti Art which she discovered on concrete city walls and sidewalks from as far afield as Germany to Brazil. Marlene uses acrylics to capture and evolve the unassuming yet powerful graffiti images she sees onto theweathered wall backgrounds of her canvases.
Sitting Pretty, Marlene's second exhibition is a bright, minimalist, graphic interpretation of the uniquely varied chairs and lounges that catch her eye. She uses unusual techniques to achieve diverse and innovative results.
