About "Beach Playground"

Children playing on the beach have been used often in artworks but my work had differences to it compared to the cliché idea. The painting I did was of three children, whom I knew and photographed. They were all sitting down playing with sand and putting it into a blue bucket. All three children had their eyes focused on this bucket which created a focal point in the artwork. I paid special attention to the composition of my artwork, as I wanted this and the focal point to be interesting aspects to the artwork.

I challenged myself in that I didn’t just simply paint three children realistically. I spliced the photo of the children so that my painting of the children would also be spliced and not of a natural form. My aim for this was to create a wave movement in the painting, symbolising the beach and the waves of the water which the children would have seen while they were playing at the beach. ‘Splicing’ was not in my original idea for the artwork, however when I was developing my art piece I stared experimenting with different techniques and this was how I ended up with this idea.

I also believe that all children should play. In today’s society, there is too much pressure on children, who are too young. They are pushed to achieve and I strongly believe that every child should get chances to play and just be the child that they are. My artwork was simple in some ways as it has a plain white background; however it has a striking feel and look to it. the meaning for the artwork being created like that is all connected and symbolic.
