About Leigh-Robin

Leigh-Robin

My Pop Art-inspired wildlife series depicts African icons such as zebras and giraffes in a contemporary, design-orientated style. While the African bush and its four-legged inhabitants are often seen as the province of macho hunters and explorers, I add a witty feminine touch to my depictions of the Big Five et al. The exciting animals spotted on safari are reimagined with bold backgrounds and unusual compositions, which make the viewer reconsider these tourist-brochure stalwarts. Inspired by modern legends such as Andy Warhol and Frida Kahlo, as well as revered South African colourists like Pierneef and Irma Stern, this series combines classic African nature, landscapes and wildlife with a focus on colour, composition and pattern.
I have been painting for over 15 years, and selling work through SouthAfricanArtists.com and group shows in the Cape Town area. My work is now hanging in the USA, Canada and South Africa. The current wildlife series builds on my enduring interest in reinterpreting African scenes in a painterly and contemporary style. Previous subjects have included treescapes, Moroccan marketers, birds in flight and coastal scenes.
When I'm not busy raising children and working in architecture, I paint in my home studio in Somerset West.
