About Ida
As a little girl I was sitting in the sign writers’ studio watching uncle Wessel Marais paint the most beautiful copper pots with flowers, donkey carts in a landscape, reflections of a wet street scene. The first evidence of any artistic inclination surfaced in her primary school days, when she was always drawing anything that tickled her fancy. He watched her while she was painting and drawing and encouraged her: “never give up a dream”. He soon thereafter, with the encouragement of her father, started a full time artist career. The rest speak for itself.
Art was inevitably one of Ida’s subjects when she went to Overkruin High School, and his first oil painting – a seascape - still proudly hangs in her home. She won various awards for her work. After school she ventured into the Information Technology domain. Whereas science and technology are largely about following disciplined, repeatable processes to arrive at a result, art encourages the mind to wander between ideas and see unexpected relationships. There's a bleed, in other words, between the ways of thinking promoted by art and those promoted by science. Which is why I think it's a good idea to explore both, as opposed to staying within one silo ... not that there's anything wrong with that.
During this period, Ida was still painting the odd landscape in her spare time, most of which were purchased by family, friends and art dealers.
Today, she has mastered various mediums and techniques incorporating different painting styles which serve as proof of her talent and diversity as an artist. She is not restricted to a specific artistic line. She produces works of art inspired by her emotion.
Ida finally decided to concentrate on his God given talent and started painting daily. It is no surprise that after this decision, she has become more at peace within herself and has surprised family and friends at the amount and quality of work she has been able to produce in a short period of time.
When we are motivated by goals that have deep meaning, by dreams that need completion, by pure love that needs expressing, then we truly live life. Doing what you love is freedom. Loving what you do is happiness.
