About Amanda

Amanda Jephson

Amanda Jephson lives on a fynbos farm, in the Southern Overberg of the Western Cape. In addition to having a wealth of beautiful flora around her, she and her husband share their farm with an array of animals including donkeys, cattle, geese, chickens and cats. Amanda works in oils, acrylics and graphic media and regards herself as a [0x1]ruralist[0x1]. Her subject matter is inspired by the rural country side : local landscapes, scenes from agrarian/animal life and vernacular farm architecture. Her style is bold and colourful with overtones of post-impressionism and expressionism.

Amanda was born in Johannesburg in 1960. She grew up in an artistic family, her mother is an artist and her parents designed costumes and stage-sets for ballet productions. She is related to the artists Nerine Desmond and Andrea Desmond-Smith. As a child she attended art classes with Nina Campbell-Quine and matriculated from the Johannesburg Art, Ballet and Music School. After working as a graphic artist in advertising she studied fine art at Michaelis School of Art at the University of Cape Town, where she obtained a BA in Fine Art and a Master of Arts in Fine Art. She lectured for eight years at the University of Cape Town in Cultural History of Western Europe and History of Art, during which time she was also a Vita Arts Judge. In 1992 she left academia and studied landscape technology, quaifying cum laude with a National Diploma in Landscape Technology. In 1995 started her own business as a landscape designer, combining her allied interests of fine art and landscape gardening. She held her first exhibition in 1979 in Cape Town and has exhibited mainly in galleries in the Western Cape. Her works are in private collections in South Africa, England, Scotland, The United States and Australia.

In 2008 she and other local artists launched the Baardskeerdersbos Art Route, which promotes the work of artists and crafters in this remote and quaint part of the Cape.
