About Thijs
ARTIST DIED IN APRIL 2020
"For as long as I can remember, art has been for me a means of coming to terms with my immediate environment. I have to find a balance between nature and that which is man made, including the art work itself. Something universal and satisfying - something beautiful, should enter into this balance. Working in the service of these qualities, is a dynamic process which should keep me occupied for the rest of my life" (Johannesburg, January 1986.) I have never cared to make so called 'protest art' as I do not see my way open to benefit from other people's misery. Thijs Nel studied art at the University of the Witwatersrand and later stayed at the Citi-Internationale-des-Arts in Paris for two years. He visited India a number of times. In 1982 he started exploring clay and ceramics. He has had many exhibitions, ranging from shows at his own studio to a retrospective at the Rand Afrikaans University in 1982 and a special 50th Anniversary show in 1993.Collections: Johannesburg Art Gallery, the Universities of Pretoria and RAU, as well as the National Museum and Arts Gallery, Gaborone. Thijs Nel lives and works in Oudtshoorn, South Africa
