About "Dance Of The Butterfly"
DANCE OF THE BUTTERFLY
This painting started with just the clay bowl as an idea. The painting developed with every brushstroke as I had no preconceived idea or vision of where it was taking me or what the end result would be like. I was purely painting with my intuition and where my heart was leading my hand. Fact: I love clay bowls, lavender and butterflies.
The analogy and symbolism that is representational in this work
The entire painting represents me as a whole in a way.
I will start at the bottom of the painting and work my way up.
The surface the bowl stands on is pretty dark and consists of a mixture of different colours and represents the struggles I experience with my health.
The roots protruding from the base of the clay bowl and growing all over extending beyond the canvas represents grounding, anchoring and humblenessyet they reach beyond the canvas symbolising constant growth in my faith and creativity.
Clay pot Clay itself is hugely Biblically symbolic and there are many references to God, the Potter. We are clay in the Potter's hands. Clay is formed, fired and made strong and is analogous to the life processes that form us as human beings, making us strong, beautiful and useful.
Grass in the clay pot Like the web of humanity, grass is all about interconnectivity. You can't alter a patch of grass without it affecting the whole. How do we treat our loved ones and other people we come into contact with has far-reaching effects. It has to do with the web of life, especially when you consider the root system of grass. Those roots hold hands, nestle together and from a community of connectivity a great metaphor for human harmony and community. You have to water grass, take care of it otherwise it will wither away and die. The emerald heart center of fresh new growth is the promise new hope brings, the eternal nature of love and the ability to share that love for the common good.
Lavender denotes purity, silence, devotion and caution. It represents spiritual healing, tranquillity, higher consciousness, the release of energy blockages, easing of tension, promotes calmness, happiness, peace and purification.
The way the lavender is growing in the painting is not your normal growth pattern, however it is growing free flowing reaching upwards, stretching itself to higher limits in a wavy format, almost like a dance.
Cloud. It is raining and thus watering the plants below so that they will grow lush. You will also notice that the cloud is in the form of a mouth which is representational of speaking gentle, encouraging and positive words which feeds people instead of breaking them down. Words spoken cannot be retrieved therefore it is better to be silent than to speak a word that could destroy the spirit of another human being.
Butterflies hey represent the soul, spiritual rebirth, transformation, creativity, metamorphosis in your life, personality, freedom, endless potential, vibrant joy, change, renewal, rebirth, lightness of being, playfulness, elevation from earthly matters, tuning into emotional or spiritual, and an ability to experience the wonder of life their power is transformation. They represent the element of air, quickly changing and always on the move gracefully. Feeding on the flowers they help pollination, thus further spread beauty. Christianity considers the butterfly as a symbol for the soul. Its connection with the soul is rather fitting. We are all on a long journey of the soul. On this journey we encounter endless turns, shifts, and conditions that cause us to morph into ever-finer beings. At our soul-journey's end we are inevitably changed - not at all the same as when we started on the path.
To take this analogy a step further, we can look again to the grace and eloquence of the butterfly and realize that our journey is our only guarantee. It is our responsibility to make our way in faith, accept the change that comes, and emerge from our transitions as brilliantly as the butterfly.
They teach us that growth and transformation does not have to be a traumatic experience. It can be joyous. Butterflies possess the ability to grow and change, leaving the safety of their chrysalis to discover a new world in a new form without fear, trusting their untested wings to fly without a doubt in their minds. They work through many important stages to become the beautiful creature they are. Similar to the butterfly, we too are always moving through different stages, each equally as vital. It is no good rushing to a particular stage, nor is it good getting stuck at a stage and becoming stagnant. The chrysalis of our thoughts and fears may be limiting, they are also safe and familiar. We can become afraid of what may be outside of our limiting thoughts and belief systems, trapping us and holding us back from ourselves, from our dreams and desires, from our unlimited potential. The butterfly, a symbol reminding me to release my fears, not to rush the process you will need to spend time in a chrysalis nurturing yourself and healing and in doing so getting in touch with your feelings and the essence of your soul self.
Butterflies convey the choice to transcend and are therefore the greatest symbol of our power to make a choice, to choose our way of being to choose our paths and to choose our destiny. With butterfly symbolism we are shown that we can reshape and re-sculpt ourselves in mind, body and spirit. Also a symbol of believing is the first step in anything you set out to do if you believe, you will find a way regardless of obstacles, if you do not believe you will not see the way and obstacles will stop you. The moment the butterflies enters the chrysalis, she has let everything she has ever know be left behind as she embraces the rapture of transcendence and complete re-birth. She has surrendered and she is ready, she trusts in something greater than herself to guide her through. Soon she will have a life filled with new possibilities and a whole new way of living.
Butterflies appear to dance as they flitter among the flowers. They remind us not to take things so seriously within our lives. They awaken a sense of lightness and joy. They remind us to get up and move, for if you do not move, you cannot dance.

About Leana
BIOGRAPHY
Leana de Villiers was born in 1969 and grew up in the Little Karoo, Western Cape and currently lives in Somerset West, South Africa.
Since childhood de Villiers has always been a naturally creative person. She believes in the power of dedication, hard work, perseverance and persistence. "Painting is what I do; it forms an integral part of my being, my existence, it's my meditation. The Artists Curse is part of the daily struggle; however at the same time the driving force that pushes oneself and ones abilities further and further, striving to satisfy the Artist's soul." -Leana de Villiers
De Villiers has a fascination with how light affects her subject matter and likes to push the contrasts between lights and darks, yet keeping it subtle and realistic at the same time. She mainly works in oils, her first love and acrylics/mixed media on occasion. Her inspiration mostly comes from nature and the world around her.

ARTIST STATEMENT
I paint my past, my present and my future; my reality, my dreams, needs and desires, which all fills my subconscious mind and spills over onto the canvas. What I put onto canvas comes from my core, every fiber within myself, from every thought and every life experience I have. One may not be fully aware of this always, but your subconscious is informing your decisions all the time in life, and especially when you are making your art.
In my paintings my main aim is to capture emotion, harmony and balance while at the same time I respond to the effects of colour, light, atmosphere and the feelings stirred up within my being when painting and viewing the subject matter.
I enjoy utilizing the characteristics that the paint offers in terms of tonal values, transparency, opaqueness, warm and cool colours to create depth in my paintings.
On the back of each painting you will find the following information: Reference Number, Title of painting, size and substrate information, medium the work was painted in, my name and full signature as proof of authenticity.
I take pride in my work and believe in delivering high quality art work.
