About "Desert Rose"

I wanted to create something soft, dreamy and feminine, three dimensional in the way the forms floats on the pronounced canvas, something unusual.

About Caro

Caro Allum

Caro Allum born iand bred n Cape Town, is a based contemporary artist who has specialized in abstract works for the past 17 years. Her works evoke a powerful sense of abstract form and are characterized by exceptional skill in her mastery of the alchemy of paint. Establishing herself in the field of abstract art, she has always adhered to the true nature of expressionism, allowing energy, emotion and experiences in life to channel the style of her art. Allum has establisehd herself as a painter of powerful and layered emotionally charge works.
After completing her studies at The Frank Joubert Art Centre (where she notably won the South African Painting award for young artists), where she studied painting under Dr. Brian Johnson who encouraged her affinity with abstraction. Allum attended The Ruth Prowse School of Art & Design and graduated in fine art in 1997. Erik Laubsher, Founder and Director of The School, as well as one of South Africa's most pertinently adapted abstract artistls in the south African scene, had a huge influence on Allum's path ahead as an abstract artist.

Allum's artworks have an ambiguity of depth and a story of contrast, due to the use layer upon layer of paint applications, so as that the artwork may have a few lives, all revealing a glimpse of the previous one, thus Creating an ambiguity of depth and a story of contrast.
True to the law of nature, Allum uses gravity, chemical reaction and evaporation as her allies. When handling the syrupy paints she spills, heaves, rubs, sands back, dilutes and drips. Layer upon layer of shear and translucent earthy glazes create an ambiguity of depth and floating form. Allum's work captures the beauty of Nature. She explores and reveals the weathering effects of exposure and time.
There is a sense that change is constant - creation, growth, weathering, erosion, repair, decay and rebirth. The rich surfaces on her canvases reflect the cyclical processes of Life.
