About "Dida - Queen of Elephants "

I have painted Dida on a number of occasions. She was an elephant cow from Tsavo, Kenya.
Her name is "DIDA", means "God given" or "Gift of God".
Anyone who ever saw Dida- even a photograph or a video, - will realize that she was a very special elephant indeed!!! She was probably the African elephant cow with the longest tusks ever recorded. Sannette called her: "Malkia wa Tembo", or the queen of elephants.
Dame Daphne Sheldrick once said: "elephant bulls who carry enormous Ivory Tusks that touch the ground are the true majestic monuments of the wilderness. Their majestic bearing epitomizes grandeur and nobility, power and stature and is a spectacle of awesome magnificence. They are the Emperors of the Elephant World; true Kings whose mere presence demands the respect and admiration of all, and none more so than their Elephant peers both large and small".
And maybe this is just where my reverence for Dida comes from. The fact that, the "male" of the species is always admired and revered while the females of the species are, same as with humans, so often overlooked and received little or no recognition.
To me Dida epitomizes not only the female of the species but women. Their resilience and ability to overcome adversity and to raise and take care of her family.

Colour is my vehicle to get the viewer's attention to connect with the emotion, the expression, to look deep within themselves and connect with whatever moves them. There is something of everybody in my paintings. I'm fascinated by the contrast that the female form presents. The softness of their skin, the roundness of their form, their vulnerability; compared to how strong their characters are, their souls, how much they can survive, how many times they can start over.
