About Kenneth
The Artist In Athlone Kenny Alexander is a visual artist who uses various media of which his favorite is pen and watercolour on paper. He also expresses himself through pieces made of wood, tins, and any odd item eg. an old shoe bottom, to create a 3D effect. He comes from a typical South African diverse historical background which encompasses an eclectic array of cultures, beliefs and experiences. He endeavours to bring understanding and insight into the distinctive cultures culminating in the melting pot which is South Africa. Thus, his art many times is a social commentary on the history and politics of the country. As Cape Town is the Mother City, she only puts forward the best parts of South Africa. Whether it be our beautiful mountains, an old stone cottage or a face covered in dirt- it is all part of her. As an avid photographer, he is always on the lookout for scenes depicting the heart of Cape Town, South Africa and the world. And so, it is too, part of his art. Furthermore, Kenny is the author of several books published under the name Kenneth M Alexander, which showcase his life experience in Apartheid and post-Apartheid South Africa. His books too are illustrated with some of his large collection of photographs He launched his first 2 books - 'Welcome to my World' and 'Pavement Special' in April 2017. Since then he published two new books viz. 'A South African By-product' and '#Just4you'. Hot of the press is hbis latest book: Man About Town which is partly autobigraphical, and once again link his own life with the history of South Africa. Man About Town will be released end of October 2019. Most of Kenny's art strongly reflects his architectural experience of the past 45 years. He was born - and now lives - in Athlone, a typical Coloured township on the sandy Cape Flats in Cape Town, South Africa. Thus, a lot of his paintings depict life and culture as experienced in Athlone, but also the wider South African political & social landscape. Many of Kenny's commentary on social issues have been published notably in The Cape Argus, Athlone News, The People's Post & Taxify. Taxify is a national print & digital periodical, distributed to ordinary citizens making use of public transport. This fact highlights Kenny's desire to make art accessible to all, independent of their political, social, financial or religious status. 24 June 2019 Art In Athlone relocated from the home gallery to an unused church building, and has seen an upswing in the number of visitors to the gallery. Kenny was the resident artist at The Daily Music Show since January 2019, where he would be seen painting a scene whether live or from a photo and typically start and completed the painting during the show which lasts about one and a half hours.
