About "Gemsbok Crossing"
Gemsbok Crossing is a layered mixed-media silkscreen composition featuring a powerful central image of a solitary gemsbok, positioned against a background of stylised zebra striping. This striking contrast sets the tone for the work--movement, presence, and the harmony of bold form with intricate detail. Above the gemsbok, abstract palm forms rise beneath a warm ochre sky, anchoring the composition in an imagined African landscape.
Framing the piece are richly patterned ethnic designs inspired by traditional African textiles and block printing. The left-hand border features bold black-and-white geometric motifs reminiscent of West African cloths, while the right-hand column is adorned with embedded materials: Ethiopian crosses, cow bone buttons, brass charms, and traditional African beads, adding both physical texture and cultural depth.
Lower panels continue the narrative with decorative symbols, simplified animal shapes, and repeating printed motifs. Gemsbok Crossing weaves wildlife, pattern, and heritage into a tactile artwork that honours Africa's layered visual traditions.

About Vivienne
Vivienne, daughter of Bobby, grew up in the Lowveld in a home full of art. After school, she did a secretarial course and then studied ceramics in Italy for a year.
She worked as a ceramic artist for 14 years and had a small studio at the Craft Gallery in Rocky Drift. Her first show at the Winkler Hotel in White River sold out, followed by another at the Nelspruit Library.
In the 1990s, Vivienne began taking photos of wildlife while travelling with her husband John Bassi, a helicopter pilot working in game capture. They travelled across Southern Africa, and she also visited Kenya twice for photography.
Later, Vivienne started painting on fabric in her studio at Casterbridge and held shows in the Lowveld and Johannesburg.
In 2018, Vivienne became ill with a brain tumour and had to stop working. With support from her cousin Heather, she began painting again--using her left hand. The artworks she creates now show her strength and love for art.
Today, Vivienne makes bold silkscreen prints of animals with African patterns. Her work is used in hotels, lodges, offices, and homes.
She also makes prints, pillow covers, table runners, and scarves.
