About "Growing Up Kent"

"Growing Up Kent" features the actor Tom Welling, famous for his role as Superman's mild alter-ego, Clark Kent, in the TV Series, Smallville.
The series explored the Man of Steel's journey of self-discovery growing up in a small town in Kansas, the era between zero and hero, so to speak.
Regrettably I stopped watching the show early on because, apart from life happening, I found Lana Lang's incessant whining over the secret that Clark is keeping from her incredibly annoying. When you find yourself screaming at the TV, "He's not your boyfriend, he doesn't have to tell you sh*t!" it's time to change the channel. When, in later years, I returned to the magical kingdom I had no idea what was going on as Lana -now even more miserable and moping- seemed to be trapped in an unhealthy relationship with Lex Luthor...
What I did love about the early Seasons of Smallville was the role that Kryptonite played in most of the storylines. Season One kicked off with a fantastic meteor shower coinciding with baby Kal-El's arrival on planet Earth. It goes on to explore how these green crystals from the planet Krypton influenced and altered various unsuspecting humans, turning them into weird and wonderful villains.
With this in mind I specifically wanted to incorporate Kryptonite into this portrait and in order to do so I turned to the colour green. Symbolising Superman's weakness, various shades of green were used to some extent in each of the previous paintings. In this artwork, however, I wanted the colour green to feature more prominently, even obnoxiously. Orange was chosen as a background colour because it is often linked to, amongst other things, creativity. And just because I could, really...
"Growing Up Kent" is the fourth Artwork in the Superman Painting Series that celebrates the most popular actors ever to have donned the famous primary coloured superhero suit. It is preceded by "The Ultimate Hero: Christopher D'Olier Reeve (1952-2004)" featuring Christopher Reeve, "Rebirth of a Legend" with Henry Cavill and "The Return" with Brandon Routh.

About Vernon

Vernon Fourie

I am an Artist, Illustrator, Cartoonist, Graphic Novelist and Teacher, and, in the words of Marc Chagall, "I work in whatever medium likes me at the moment."

From the Art Brush
I am greatly inspired by Pop Art, the Superhero Culture, Comic Book Art, Movies and Spirituality, and have a near-unhealthy obsession with the use of bright colours.
My Painting Process combines variations of Oil, Acrylic, Ink and Encaustic, while my Technique enthusiastically incorporates the element of chance, allowing selected mediums to bring their own uniqueness to the piece.
My artwork is fuelled by the Geek Sub-Culture: thousands like me who draw their strength and inspiration from fictional heroes by embracing their passion for Superheroes, Epic Adventures, Fantasy and Wonder.
It is about man's ability to imagine and believe and also his ability to draw strength from this belief. It is about becoming something greater by believing in something greater.

From the Pencil
"Genesis for Beginners," my nearly completed Graphic Novel, explores the well-known tale of Adam & Eve from a Humorous and Spiritual angle.
The "I Believe" Coffee Mugs is a series of Illustrations executed in Pen, Ink & Mixed Media and printed onto Ceramic Mugs. As a Collection the "I Believe" Illos celebrate Passion, Belief and Wonder.

From the Marker
Scribing, a more recent addition to my Creative Journey, takes me to the Boardrooms of the Corporate world where I visually document thoughts and ideas in a simplified and humorous way. Projects range from Visual Harvesting during Workshops and Forums to Audio-Visual Recordings for Presentations.
Companies include, amongst others, Capitec Bank and Old Mutual.

From the Heart
ToonSchool, my monthly Cartoon Sessions for Teenagers and Adults, is dedicated to the teaching of hand-drawn Cartoons and Illustrations to those who either wish to learn from scratch, would like to further their own illustrative skill or are interested in pursuing a Career in the fast-growing Illustration & Animation Industries.

May the Creative Force be with You!!!
V.
