About Sonnet
Sonnet Flynn is a 34-year-old artist staying in Worcester, with her husband and two daughters. She works as a drumming therapy and creativity co-ordinator at a reahbilitation centre for alcohol and drug addiction. Sonnet paints in her free time.
Sonnet was born in Klerksdorp, the second eldest of four siblings. Unfortunately her brother was born hearing impaired and because of this her family had to move to the Western Cape, (Worcester) for his education. It was in this Boland town where she attended primary and high school.
Her grandfather was a very talented artist and crafter, as well as her father, although neither of them pursued this as a career. It was inevitable for Sonnet not to be interested in art from a very young age. She sketched throughout primary school, but only started painting in high school. She attended the Hugo Naude Art School in Worcester. Her painting teacher Mr. Louis Stroh van der Walt (a well known artist in the Western Cape) introduced her to oil paints and showed Sonnet the technique of layering. At that moment however she was working very expressively and didn't have any confidence in oil as a medium.
After finishing matric Sonnet moved to Cape Town where she took a course in Art Directing at City Varsity, Multimedia School for film and Television. The course taught her to do make up, special effects and decor painting for film, stage and television. Make up was not very enjoyable for her, but she believes this has been helping her a lot with the painting of portraits. Thanks to a very determined lecturer Sonnet got forced to do a lot of decor painting and because of the lecturer's confidence in her, she discovered the hidden talent of painting very realistically. She also rediscovered oil as a medium. She worked in a few stage productions as well as in the film industry after college, doing costume props and make up.
In 2002 Sonnet went to the UK on a working holiday visa. In the time she spent there she did not paint. From the UK Sonnet traveled to Spain and twice to India. She was deeply moved by the poverty of this country, this also had a huge impact on some of the paintings she's done.
Sonnet is currently trying to break away from her normal style of realistic portraiture, experimenting with texture, pattern and colour in combination with subjects that moves her.
In September 2008 Sonnet entered a mosaic mural design competition held by the Enlighten Education Trust of Hermanus. Her design was among the top four entries, which earned her and two others the merit prize.
Some of her works can currently be seen at the Mountain Resort Gallery in Slanghoek.
