About "Himba Night"

The images depicted in this work are taken from the lifestyle of the Himba people of Namibia. I used dried tree bark to depict the plaited and ochred hair worn by the women. I used warm oranges and reds of the ochre mixed with butter fat used to protect the skin from the harsh Namibian sun. The "crackle effect (which is chemically stable) was used to interpret the dry arid state found in the desent where the nomadic Himba carve out a meagre living from their cattle.

About Anne

Anne Lee

Born and educated in Glasgow, Scotland, Anne Lee studied drawing and oil painting at Glasgow School of Art.
Her interest in water-colour painting began in South Africa, where she studied and developed her technique mainly in landscape.
Following several trips to Kenya she began working in soft pastel inspired by the beautiful intricate beadwork and colourful dress of the Maasai.
A commission from Oxford University Press to provide illustrations of African children in school situations, for use in school readers and text books, was published in several African languages.

Recently she has begun painting in acrylic on canvas using texture and the colours found in nature to produce semi-abstract panels.
In 1993 she joined the South African Society of Artists and became a Council member in 1994 and was voted into the office of President for two years from 1998 to 1999. She was invited to be one of the judges for the Western Cape Watercolour Group[0x1]s Annual exhibition, held in 1999.
She is also a partner of the Original Cape Art Group, formed in 1998
