About "House in Kolmanskoppe"

Rundown house in ghosttown Kolmanskoppe, Luderitz, Namibia. This house dates back to 1908. This ghosttown's crumbling ruins bear little resemblance to its former glory, now demolished by the wind, gradually becoming enveloped by sand dunes.

About Marie

Marie Ridout

I started painting at the age of twelve but only to sabotage the work of my eldest brother who happened to be an art graduate at University of Cape Town. Needless to say he was not impressed to have his little sister ruin his masterpiece!

I am a clothing designer and about seven years ago started painting in my spare tine. I also teach an art form which I have named "Baroque Art" to ladies at a local arts and craft shop. Presently I design and manufacture motorcycle garments and have a great passion for the outdoors and the beauty of South Africa.

I spend a great deal of my spare time on over landing trips exploring Africa, where the rich landscapes and endless beauty of my surroundings inspire me to paint. I have taught myself to take exquisite photos of a variety of subjects and these often form the basis of my work. I am blessed to have seen many remote areas with rare and beautiful old and derelict buildings and ruins, these often appear in my art.

I work with a variety of materials including oil, acrylic, fabric, water colours and also gilders paste. Most of my work is on display in the houses of friends and relatives. I have done a number of commissions and recently started a small business professionally selling my art.
