About "Icarus (After Herbert James Draper)"

We all strive to attain heights of perfection or freedom. To fly with the eagles or masters or legends. Yet do often this comes with a price. Yet it is often better to have tried and failed than to never have tried.

About Mark

Mark Boshoff

I'm inspired by the play of light - how it reveals emotion in landscapes, figures, and fleeting moments. My work blends realism with symbolism, using layered brushwork, glazes, and mark-making to explore themes of solitude, transformation, and connection. I draw from history, mythology, and personal experience to create visual narratives that resonate across time and culture.

Whether painting a storm-lit tree, a mythic embrace, or a dancer caught mid-leap, I aim to evoke feeling and reflection. My art is a declaration of what moves me--and an invitation for others to find meaning in the tension between beauty and vulnerability.

As an artist based in South Africa, I'm inspired by the richness of our landscapes and the complexity of our stories. I approach each canvas with both sensitivity and intent, aiming to create work that resonates across cultures and contexts. My goal is to connect - to offer viewers a moment of reflection, recognition, or emotional clarity.

Art, for me, is not decoration -- it's declaration. It's a way of saying: "This mattered. This moved me. This might move you too."
