Reference 6797 About "Invitation to Sardanapalus" The title derives from Delacroix's work, The Death of Sardanapalus. I had been thinking about the strange status of the nude in painting, especially when there appeared to be no particular reason for nudity. I guessed it was a Classical thing but the Romantics took it to another dimension. I had originally included a lot of detail and tonal information in the piazza behind the figures but glazed most of it out to enhance a sense of crepuscular intrigue. This is one of my favourite paintings. |
