Reference self-portrait About "Liesel (God's Garden)" Liesel is a self-portrait and part of my God's Garden Series. In this specific piece - the Protea symbolizes my love for my home country and the rose hints to my European Ancestors (mixture of Dutch, French, German, and Scottish). However although I have European ancestors, it doesn't make me European. Just as Indian South Africans are already different to their ancestors. South Africa has a strong influence in the way I speak, what I eat and even the music that I listen to and I believe that if we all sit around a table many South Africans would realize that we are not as different as we think. We have more things that can unite us, if we choose to focus on the positive elements. |
