About "Looking Ahead"

I took pictures of children playing on the farm and I wanted to transform the photographs into simple but striking portraits.

About Pieter

Pieter Pienaar

I am an Art teacher at a private school in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where I am currently a Primary School Art teacher in the boys' section. (I started here in August 2012. I relocated from Pretoria, where I was an Art teacher for 14 and half years.) Being a teacher does not allow me much time to do traditional work. I enjoy doing "quick" abstracts or spout drawings (and still life paintings - when I have time to concentrate).

I see each abstract work as an opportunity to engage in some "visual mathematics". (I enjoy making pairs of abstracts that fit together.) I simply decide on the base colour and then start sculpting the shapes and lines to a degree of personal "contentment or perfection". My abstract works fall indeed into the abstract expressionist category. If the viewer sees very deep significance in any of my works it is a bonus, but personally I feel my works celebrate the creative moment and the colourful possibilities that life affords us all.

In my postgraduate studies I investigated the value the Arts hold for self-insight and it has become an interest of mine and I hope to present more motivational courses that entail harnassing the therapeutic aspects of the Arts to awaken people to their own potential.

On the 15th of August 2009 my exhibition entitled "Ver in die ou Kalahari" opened at Cameo Framers in Waterkloof, Pretoria. I spent three weeks on our family farm and I completed 48 art works, predominantly spout drawings.

During the December 2009 and January 2010 school holidays I completed a new batch of abstracts and portrait spout drawings and they will be loaded during the course of the next few months.

During September 2011 I was very fortunate to visit Europe for the very first time. There I became aware of the possibilities that reproductions pose. I reproduced some of my Kalahari-scapes for tourism purposes.

(October 2013) Since late August 2012 I have been teaching Art in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and I took inspiration from the new exciting environment. I made about 100 new works during the course of the past year but the transition took its toll and I have not had time to load my works as I should have done. I will during the course of the next month add the works of the previous year in Saudi Arabia.

Exhibitions

I have exhibited at the Oudtshoorn Arts festival in 1997. Kunshuis Clanwilliam has been displaying my work since 1997, Tugwell Gallery Hartebeespoortdam sold some of my works and I participated in a few group exhibitions in and around Pretoria. A highlight was when I exported three large works to Korea.
In May 2014 I had my first exhibition in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) entitled: Journey with Jeddah I and in February 2015 I had another exhibition Journey with Jeddah II in Jedday at the same gallery space.
