About "Looking Through"

I took photograph of a landscape through a gun-porthole in an old Fort in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. I decided to paint it and used the palet knife quite a bit.

About Valerie

I am a South African oil painter from East London whose work explores the beauty of nature through colour, realism and expressive mark-making. My paintings combine contemporary floral realism with impressionistic and abstract influences. Recognisable flowers are surrounded by layered, painterly backgrounds in which colour, texture and movement create atmosphere and emotion.

Working from my sun-filled studio, I approach each painting with curiosity and a willingness to experiment. Inspired by flowers, light, nature and the richness of everyday life, I seeks not only to paint what I see, but to capture the feeling it evokes. My work is ultimately about beauty, optimism and the joy of being alive.
