About "Red"
Every once in a while, if you are really lucky, you get to meet someone who just gets your specific kind of crazy. For me that person was my friend, Robert McEwan. Robert and I used to work together during the day-job years, spending most of our time at work drawing, joking around, eating biltong and discussing all kinds of topics ranging from Superheroes to reincarnation. It was the Spiritual connection between us that I valued the most. It is such a rare thing to be able to connect with someone on a Spiritual level, to be able to share your thoughts and ideas about the Great Unknown without having to explain yourself and without any judgement. Apart from being an incredibly talented animator, Robert himself was but a walking cartoon, with more faces and voices than you would find in a morning of watching the Cartoon Network. He was joy personified, proud of his Scottish heritage and insanely proud of being a ginger. So, a couple of years ago, when I originally had the idea of a doing a Tribute Piece to the Archie comics, Robert was the most natural choice of portrait to join my favourite childhood comic book character on canvas. I grew up with Archie and the gang and I spent many an hour pouring over my comic books, absorbing the subtle comedy and skilled cartooning style. (To this day I still draw my female hands based on the way the Archie artists executed the hands of Betty and Veronica). The adventures of the famous red-headed teenager were filled with a remarkable sense of purity, morality and innocence (unlike the current TV Series, Riverdale, which strays disturbingly far from the original). This artwork entitled "Red" is dedicated to my friend, Robert McEwan, who lost his battle against cancer on 19 April 2017. He was 27 years old. I am blessed for knowing him and for the light and laughter that he brought to this world. And even though I couldn't be happier that he got to go home, I miss him every day. V.

About Vernon
I am an Artist, Illustrator, Cartoonist, Graphic Novelist and Teacher, and, in the words of Marc Chagall, "I work in whatever medium likes me at the moment."
From the Art Brush I am greatly inspired by Pop Art, the Superhero Culture, Comic Book Art, Movies and Spirituality, and have a near-unhealthy obsession with the use of bright colours. My Painting Process combines variations of Oil, Acrylic, Ink and Encaustic, while my Technique enthusiastically incorporates the element of chance, allowing selected mediums to bring their own uniqueness to the piece. My artwork is fuelled by the Geek Sub-Culture: thousands like me who draw their strength and inspiration from fictional heroes by embracing their passion for Superheroes, Epic Adventures, Fantasy and Wonder. It is about man's ability to imagine and believe and also his ability to draw strength from this belief. It is about becoming something greater by believing in something greater.
From the Pencil "Genesis for Beginners," my nearly completed Graphic Novel, explores the well-known tale of Adam & Eve from a Humorous and Spiritual angle. The "I Believe" Coffee Mugs is a series of Illustrations executed in Pen, Ink & Mixed Media and printed onto Ceramic Mugs. As a Collection the "I Believe" Illos celebrate Passion, Belief and Wonder.
From the Marker Scribing, a more recent addition to my Creative Journey, takes me to the Boardrooms of the Corporate world where I visually document thoughts and ideas in a simplified and humorous way. Projects range from Visual Harvesting during Workshops and Forums to Audio-Visual Recordings for Presentations. Companies include, amongst others, Capitec Bank and Old Mutual.
From the Heart ToonSchool, my monthly Cartoon Sessions for Teenagers and Adults, is dedicated to the teaching of hand-drawn Cartoons and Illustrations to those who either wish to learn from scratch, would like to further their own illustrative skill or are interested in pursuing a Career in the fast-growing Illustration & Animation Industries.
May the Creative Force be with You!!! V.
