About "Skrik-Wakker / Wake-Up"

The concept behind the painting is born out of the ideas of dualism and materialism and influenced by the ideas and research of Michael Egnor (Neurosurgeon) and Rupert Sheldrake (biologist) particularly were they pertain to consciousnesses. I have also made use of cultural artifacts like masks, combs and other adornments as well as and the idea of the land/space as an experience of the mind rather than only a physical entity based in reality.
This painting is a commentary on and reaction to the dispossession of culture and land by the colonist establishment. The using of the "old masters" traditional art is a criticism of the hubris and exceptionalism in imposing their romantic view point on history as superiors.

About Gary

Gary Frier

"I believe that making art is a compulsive act of self expression that can only be realized through the collaborative act of creating and experiencing. Creating art for me is about constantly reflecting on my place in the reality. Using art to express a emotional and intellectual and tactile value, discovering how to distill and interpret my interaction with what surrounds me and documenting that personal relationship.
