About Kari
Born in Harare, Zimbabwe. Moved to Durban and graduated in Fine Art in 1989, with painting as a major and first love.
After graduating, Kari worked and studied sculptural ceramics and slip casting for a year in own studio, before painting full time, commercially and professionally.
Initially she worked commercially on large-scale formats for theatre as well as for film, and the hotel industry. Was also freelancing as a muralist and worked on various community projects in Durban, one of which was at the Bartel Arts Centre.
Has worked both nationally and internationally as muralist/artist and works hang in private homes and corporations in South Africa and over-seas.
A favourite commission was the designing and execution of the murals in the restaurant and conference centre at the Singapore Zoo, as well as “Miss World” Sun City Superbowl, Sol Kerzner's Atlantis project in Dubai and others.
Large scale commercial work painted predominately on the floor with brushes and sticks has initiated a physical approach to painting and the artist has enjoyed exploring quick working methods.
Early works on canvas were mainly figurative, influenced by artists such as Eric Fischl. The open, expansive gestures of the Neo-Expressionists such as Susan Rothenberg and Helen Frankenthaler were an influence at this time.
Nature is a source of inspiration and the conflict and harmony between man and beast has been a starting point in many works.
Recently work has diversified stylistically and is focused more on the figurative with the human element as a source of inspiration in present and successive projects.
Kari is the founder of the Cape Town Stuckists and is the 1st member of Stuckism in South Africa. Stuckism is the first remodernist art movement
Artists that today inspire, are those Re-modernist painters such as Ella Guru, Billy Childish, Charles Thomson and Richard Cronborg, whos latest work could be classified as "Neo-Expressionist"!
