Early Life and Education

Gerrit Pitout embarked on his educational journey in Barberton, later advancing his studies at the Teachers Training College of Pretoria. Fueled by an unwavering commitment to perfect his craft, Pitout earned his honors in fine art from the University of South Africa. His artistic repertoire extends to a fellowship in photography (FPSSA), enhancing his authoritative presence in the art world. Remarkably, at the tender age of 17, Gerrit held his inaugural solo exhibition in Plaston near Nelspruit.

One of Pitout's notable commission works was for the Voortrekker Monument. He meticulously painted five large panels depicting the daunting mountain ranges that the Voortrekkers traversed in the 1800s. This contribution not only adds a visual narrative to the historical context but also aligns Pitout's art alongside other South African art masters such as Pierneef, WH Coertzer, and Anton van Wouw, within the esteemed collection at the monument.
