About "A Signified Other"
A Signified Other
A physical image of me served as the visual source and as the basis of each work. I worked with a playful element of uncontrollable chance that had the effect of abstracting the source, often beyond recognition. Each independently treated work is in effect a signifier in itself as its significance corresponds not with the source of its creation but with the viewer’s contextual contribution. By visually disrupting the source multiple signifiers are introduced and encourage the multiplicity of possible readings of the work.
A correlation exists between the autonomous entities and their contextual boundaries. Independent works is contradictorily represented through a series and initiate an inquiry into the possibility of creating independent or unique works despite their shared source.
With the intention of focusing on the notion of intertextual reading I attempted to refrain from suggesting any finality or definitive conclusion in terms of meaning while similarly the final form of the painting in terms of their shared source are themselves disrupted so as to reinforce a sense of ambiguity and instability.
