About Bruce
Designer Bruce Bastew was born in Kwa-Zulu Natal , South Africa in 1972. From a young age he has been exploring his natural God given gift as a craftsman and has always been fascinated with creating something from nothing. Over the years he has explored the arts of leather tooling, airbrushing, concrete art, cabinetry woodwork, and finally found his true called by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, in reclaimed wood sculpture. Intrigued with wood what seems to be little more than firewood to some, can be turned into a unique functional work of art. The artists objective is to reclaim discarded wood and tree roots and give them a new purpose in peoples lives. It does not matter whether the items are created for outdoor or interior spaces, but the artist only uses discarded, dead, or burnt wood, which has lost its commercial value. Finding the right wood is the first step in the creative process, and one he enjoys very much. He is intrigued by the natural beauty and unique growth patterns - each piece of wood speaks to him. He finds inspiration in their shapes, holes, cracks and burns, the history of the tree can be seen in every twist and knot in the grain. The natural characteristics and beauty is preserved and displayed in each unique sculptural piece.
