About "Alien Species 1"
After woking on a serious body of work I decided to make happy pots. I used a dry matt glaze, which reacts with the iron in the clay body, giving interesting nuances on the surface.

About Deon
Every person on earth who are blessed enough to be able to express themselves creatively and wish to develop this skill has one of two options: You can either approach your education formally through tertiary institutions or you can learn the skill from masters within the field. I chose to learn from and work with masters whom I consider to be great. Names who stand out and from whom I have learned the most includes Ken Collins and Kim Sacks.
I started my career in studio ceramics and later progressed to commercial production. My clients included Homeware and Boutique interior stores as well as 5 star game lodges, both locally and international.
My work has been featured in various interior and glossy magazines. Some of my work also featured on the sets of advertisements and South African TV soapies. Commissioned works included pieces for local and international celebrities. After the sale of my Commercial Production Facility I reverted back to studio ceramics where I concentrate on the creation of fine art pieces. I also publish a quarterly electronic magazine titled Into Ceramics, accessible on intoceramics.com
During the course of my career to date I have contributed to the enhancement of the accessibility of Ceramics to the consumer market in South Africa. One of the things that I am most proud of is that my work brings the element of design to ceramics. This process allowed me to experiment with new methods of firing and the further development of raw materials in conjunction with suppliers. I see myself as a mentor and inspiration to aspiring young talent.
In my current body of work I deal with Violence as a theme. Our society has accepted violence as part of everyday life and is often in denial about it. The numbers appearing on the work are statistics for assault, rape and murder. The pieces show the scars of manufacturing instead of being perfectly finished, reflecting the ugly side of the story. Lace and florals are used to make it look pretty, thus denying the reality. Quotes on the pieces are from love songs and children[0x1]s rhymes - violence and abuse often are inflicted by people you love.
I am celebrating 25 years in Ceramics in 2009. Currently I am exploring unusual surface finishes, and produce work with a message rather than functional pieces. I was nominated by the Department of Trade and Industry as an IKON of South African craft in 2009.
