About "Amber Violin"
Lia Koekemoer
(1976 - )
Lia's love for South Africa, the poetry, the songs, the legends, the towns and their people are passionately expressed in her paintings. She was born on 22 July 1976 in Pretoria, Gauteng. She grew up near Bapsfontein where she attended a small farm school and travelled from a young age through South Africa. In 1994 Lia matriculated in the heart of the Bushveld where she also attended boarding school and moved on to study theatre and technology for two years at the Pretoria Technikon.
Her inspiration came from Frans Claerhout, Maurice van Essche, Marjorie Wallace, Pieter van der Westhuizen, Irma Stern, and Johannes Meintjies. However, her favourite artist is Hennie Niemann Snr who is not only an inspiration but also her mentor.
Although painting has always been her first love, she has worked in many different mediums and also loves pottery and craft design. Her work ranges but mostly captures her fondness for the people of the Western Cape in her figurative art.
I find happiness in creating and appreciating art. The more I look at people and places, the more I realize that Life is beautiful.
