About Jane

Jane Makhubele

Billy Makhubele and his wife Jane Makhubele are a husband and wife team who design and make colourful art works based on the historic events which have occurred in South Africa. Billy designs the piece and Jane and his other wife, Jamina and their children make the artworks out of beads, pins, mirrors and other objects on cloth.
Billy Makhubele was a pioneer in the making of wire sculpture and was selected to represent South Africa at the Valparaiso Biennale in Chile in 1985. His and his familys artworks are represented in many museums and public collections in South Africa.
Billy Makhubele is the guest curator of Dungamanzi/Stirring Waters, an exhibition of Tsonga/Shangaan art and culture which opened at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in May 2007 and is touring nationally in 2008. It opens at the South African National Gallery in Cape Town in February 2008. Billy Makhubele, is respected as a collector of rare beaded artworks and items of clothing of the Ndebele and Shangaan. Many of these items are today preserved in major public collections in South Africa.
