About Johan

Johan du Plessis

Johan was born in 1972 on the Highveld of Mpumalanga. Residing in Cullinan as full time artist, Johan is one of probably the smallest group of sculptors who mainly use welding as part of his fabrication process. His sculptures includes a wide variety of mediums like metal, ,bronze, granite, marble, sandstone and cement.

Metal art welding is basically a form of sculpting in reverse. Whereas sculpting starts from a block of stone and the process entails the removal of all material not part of what is to be the finished piece, metal art welding starts with nothing and keeps on adding until the work of art is completed. Two processes, converse to each other, and Johan is making use of both.

INSPIRATION: Simplicity of form,a love of stone, metal bronze and the curiosity of new ideas and techniques stimulate Johan's imagination.
CHALLENGE : Choosing to work in hard mediums,he enjoy the resistance and physical challenge of creating his timeless and lasting works of art.
AESTHETICS: Johan is interested in exploring sculptural form , texture and contrast to
enhance both human and natural environments.
SCALE : Johan's work spans a range of sizes from sculptures designed for residential interior and exterior placement ,to large scale public and corporate
institutions.
INQUIRIES : He welcomes working directly with clients as well as inquiries about commissions.
